Sabbatai Zevi

Sabbatai Zevi was a jewish kabbalist and rabbi from Smyrna (Turkey), who declared himself the Antichrist/Jewish Messiah in 1666 (Saturn the 666 is worshiped on the Sabbath). Smyrna is one of the seven churches mentioned in the Book of Revelation. He gave rise to the Sabbatean movement, which spread across jews in Europe. In Constantinople Turkey, he and his followers were forced to convert to Islam, were known as Dönmeh (converts, crypto-jews).

He was born on the 9th of Av, associated with tragedies like the destruction of the Temple of Jerusalem.

He practiced the kabbalah of Isaac Luria. For the jews, the apocalyptic prophecies of a Messiah were associated with the return to the land of Israel. Sabbatai Zevi and his prophet Nathan of Gaza inverted all teachings of ascetism and preached a philosophy of redemption through sin (Satanism) to hasten the biblical prophecy.

Sabbataism was excommunicated from 1670. Mordekhai of Eisenstadt from Prague spread the movement in Poland. Jacob Querido, brother of Sabbatai's wife, became the leader of the Dönmeh in Thessaloniki Greece, led them on a pilgrimage to Mecca.

Sabbataeism survived in Holland with Jacob Judah Templo, Petrus Serrarius, Solomon Ayllon, Nehemiah Hayyun, .. Jacob Judah Templo worked with Charles II Stuart.

Jonathan Eybeschutz was accused by rabbi Ya'akov Emden of being a Sabbatean. According to rumors, his grandson was Moses Dobruska, who founded the Asiatic Brethren in Vienna and was a cousin of Jacob Frank.

Jacob Frank saw himself as a reincarnation of Sabbatai Zvi. He arrived in Poland in 1755. His followers spread Frankism. Frankists joined the Jacobin Club during the French Revolution, because they saw Napoleon as the new Messiah.

Gershom Sholem, friend of Walter Benjamin (Frankfurt School), wrote Sabatai Sevi The Mystical Messiah and From Frankism to Jacobinism.
