At Hollywood High School he was a classmate of Mike Farrell (Bonanza, NBC show The Monkees), married to the ex-wife of Lou Adler. Other classmates were Ricky Nelson (Adventures of Ozzie and Harriett, Rio Bravo with John Wayne, Bluebird Records) and Joan Wohlstetter (daughter of Albert Wohlstetter (CCNY, RAND Corporation, friend of Dwight Macdonald of Partisan Review).
He was also educated at University of Southern California and Princeton.
He wrote for World Affairs of James Denton (Victims of Communism with John Singlaub of World Anti-Communist League, Freedom House, published by Jeane Kirkpatrick, consultant to Viktor Orban and Open Society Foundations) and David Reiff (son of Susan Sontag).
He worked for Hollinger International of Conrad Black (The Jerusalem Post).
He served as Assistant Secretary of Defense under Ronald Reagan.
He is a member of the Jewish Institute for National Security Affairs (Joe Lieberman, jesuit Douglas Feith, Dick Cheney) and The Washington Institute for Near East Policy (Condoleeza Rice, jesuit John Allen, Elliot Cohen, George Schultz).
He played a role in George W Bush's War on Terror. He wrote An End to Evil How to Win the War on Terror with David Frum (AEI), who coined the term Axis of Evil. He was a member of Committee for the Peace and Security in the Gulf, the Committee for the Liberation of Iraq.
As manager of Deloitte Consulting (Stewart Brand, Richard Dearlove of MI6, Mitt Romney's son Tagg Romney) he was an advisor of Muammar Gaddafi.
