John Birks 'Dizzy' Gillespie was

He performed in Greenwich Village at The Village Gate (Edgard Varèse, Miles Davis, Bill Evans, Duke Ellington, John Coltrane, Jimi Hendrix, Woody Allen, Nina Simone, Lenny Bruce, Velvet Underground). Lighting engineer Chip Monk was used during the Woodstock festival.
He trained Arturo Sandoval.
He performed at the Playboy Jazz Festival in LA with Adelaide Hall.
His autobiography was published by Doubleday.
